Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill has gone diamond, making Lauryn the first female rapper to achieve this feat.

Announced by the RIAA via Twitter, the tweet celebrated Lauryn Hill’s achievement and highlighted the significance of it coming to light during America’s Black History Month.

They tweeted “Welcome to the RIAA Diamond Club @MsLaurynHill! #TheMiseducationofLaurynHill is now a (10X) certified album! @ColumbiaRecords #BlackHistoryMonth #RIAATopCertified.”

Released in 1998, Hill’s debut solo album followed her departure from the Fugees.

The album housed rap lyricism that was as quality and poignant as Lauryn’s vocals – making the album a cultural artifact which can be linked to the early inspirations of many of the 21st century’s most successful artists.

The duality exemplified on this album makes Lauryn Hill the listed inspiration for several artists including Drake, Nicki Minaj and Foxy Brown.

The success that The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill achieved at the Grammy Awards was also historic.

Lauryn became the first hip-hop artist to win Album of the Year and the first woman to take home five awards in one night.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill joins the hip-hop diamond album league which is also home to Tupac, OutKast, Eminem and The Notorious B.I.G.
